A Backyard Pool Built for Real Life in East Nashville.
Every backyard pool project starts with a vision.
For this East Nashville family, the vision was simple: Create a backyard where their two teenage kids (and all their neighborhood friends) could swim, hang out, and spend long summer afternoons together.
When they first reached out to Nashville Dip Pools, they were considering installing one of our signature dip pools. But as we talked through how they wanted to use the space, it quickly became clear that they needed something slightly larger.
They wanted a pool where kids could jump in from the side, swim around, and play games, but still one compact enough to fit comfortably within their backyard.
And like many East Nashville homes, the lot came with a few unique challenges. But with thoughtful planning and design, the result became a backyard that feels both intentional and effortless.
Before construction began, we needed to work through two site constraints that are actually pretty common in Nashville pool projects.
An overhead electrical line ran directly across the backyard.
Most homeowners don’t realize this, but Nashville Electric Service requires power lines to be at least 10 feet away from the water’s edge of a pool (measuring from directly under the line).
This situation comes up on roughly 25% of the projects we evaluate in Nashville. Working with our electrician, we coordinated with NES to relocate the power line from the backyard to the front of the property.
Fortunately, there were already transformers on the street in front of the home, which made the relocation process far more manageable. Once the line was moved, construction could move forward.
The second obstacle was a sewer line running across the backyard.
Sewer lines can sometimes be relocated, but doing so often adds significant cost to a project. Instead of moving the line, we designed the pool layout intentionally to avoid it altogether.
With thoughtful planning, we were able to protect the existing infrastructure while still delivering the exact backyard the homeowners envisioned.
Once the layout was finalized, the homeowners selected the Bliss 26 fiberglass pool from Imagine Pools, finished in Storm Grey.
For this family, it ended up being the perfect balance between size and usability.
The pool includes:
• A sun shelf tanning ledge at the entry, perfect for relaxing in shallow water or for younger children
• A full-length bench along one side, ideal for sitting, socializing, and supervising swimmers
• A depth profile from 3’6” to 5’5”, making it great for swimming, games, and kids jumping in from the side
The goal for this pool wasn’t just relaxation. It was activity. Diving for rings. Water volleyball. Friends coming over after school.
The Bliss 26 checked every one of those boxes.
Storm Grey has quickly become one of our most requested fiberglass pool colors. There are two main reasons:
• First, darker interior finishes create a deeper, richer blue water color once the pool is filled.
• Second, darker finishes tend to hide dirt and debris better between cleanings than lighter shells.
The result is a pool that looks elegant while also being practical for everyday use.
One of the biggest goals for this project was to make the pool feel like it had always belonged in the yard.
The homeowners had recently built a wood deck with a covered patio, so we designed the pool and patio to integrate naturally with that existing structure.
They also didn’t want to lose their entire yard to patio space. Their kids love playing soccer, so maintaining open green space was important.
That balance guided many of the design decisions.
For the patio and pool coping, we installed Techo-Bloc pavers, which are our preferred hardscape material at Nashville Dip Pools.
They offer excellent durability and a wide range of colors and textures that allow us to create thoughtful outdoor designs.
For this backyard, we used a layered color palette:
• Greyed Nickel for the pool coping and primary patio border
• Onyx Black as an accent border
• Shale Gray for the main patio area
These tones complement the Storm Grey pool shell and create a clean, modern outdoor space.
Once installed, the pavers were sealed to enhance their color and protect the surface.
One of the most fun parts of this project came from learning more about the family (A lot of our clients become friends!!).
Their kids are serious soccer players!
Originally, the plan was to install standard artificial turf behind the pool. But when we evaluated the grading, we realized the yard sloped nearly two feet from the pool patio to the back fence.
So we made an adjustment. We installed a small retaining wall to create a flat yard area. Then we took things one step further.
Beacon Turf installed artificial turf with soccer field lines built directly into it, creating what feels like a mini training field for the kids and their friends.
It turned the backyard into more than just a pool space. It became a place for activity.
We also made several practical improvements around the home.
Along the sides of the house, where mud had previously been an issue, we installed river rock with stepping stones to improve drainage and create a clean access path.
For privacy around the pool, we planted six-foot arborvitae trees along both sides of the yard.
Arborvitae are a great option for pool landscapes because they are:
• Fast growing
• Naturally narrow
• Cost-effective
Within a few years, they should reach eight to ten feet tall, providing even more privacy above
the existing fence.
To finish the project, the homeowners added several features that make the pool easier and safer to use.
Automatic Pool Cover
With kids and pets around, safety was important. The automatic cover provides peace of mind while also reducing debris and heating costs.
Saltwater System
The pool uses a salt chlorination system, which produces softer-feeling water and simplifies maintenance.
Pool Heater
Combined with the automatic cover, the heater allows the family to extend their swimming season dramatically, even keeping the pool around 90°F during colder months.
In the end, this project became exactly what the homeowners hoped for. Not just a pool. A backyard where kids jump in with friends, parents relax on the bench seating, and a quick soccer game can break out just a few steps away.
Projects like this are our favorite because they show how thoughtful design can transform even a challenging backyard into something truly special.
For this East Nashville family, the result is simple:
A backyard built for connection, activity, and years of memories.
