A Courtyard Retreat in the Heart of 12 South

When these homeowners moved to Nashville a couple of years ago, their first big project was renovating the inside of their home. That’s something we hear often—families move in, spend the first year making the house feel like home, and then turn their sights outside.

This Kirkwood property presented some unique challenges and opportunities. The backyard was spacious but enclosed, and there was no equipment access from either side yard. Thankfully, the neighboring property was under construction, and we were able to partner with the builder to gain temporary access through their lot. That gave us a small window to work—and we moved fast.

We broke ground on November 3 and had the pool shell installed, coping completed, and plumbing run to the equipment pad by November 20. On that same day, we filled the pool with water—less than three weeks from start to finish for the core installation.

Finding the Right Fit

The homeowners have three teenagers and love to host gatherings. While their backyard was large (for Nashville standards!), they wanted the pool to fit comfortably within their existing courtyard area, next to a beautiful pergola that had been there for many many years. A larger pool wasn’t the answer for this space—a dip pool was the perfect fit.

This 8' x 18' x 4' dip pool maximizes their outdoor living area without overwhelming the space. It's a great example of how a compact pool can deliver big fun and function. People often ask us if these pools are "too small." This project shows exactly how they can meet a family’s needs beautifully.

‍Designed for Family & Fun

The pool is finished with a travertine hardscape deck, creating a clean and timeless look. For safety and convenience, the family added an automatic pool cover. With kids, pets, and large trees all around, the cover helps protect their loved ones and keeps leaves and sap out of the water.

They also equipped the pool for year-round enjoyment, with 10 spa jets, a gas heater, a UV+Ozone sanitizer and smart automation. We've heard the stories—on snow days, the first thing this family does is grab their swimsuits and jump into their 100-degree dip pool.

Now, the courtyard is the centerpiece of their backyard gatherings. Whether it’s a quiet family night or a big get-together with friends, the dip pool brings warmth, fun, and connection to their home.
